Registration is now open for the second colloquium in the Concrete Pavements - Important Issues in Construction and Design series, entitled 'Concrete Pavements. "Joints and Connections", which will be a continuation of the June 1 event. Event will take place on-line on 1st of September 2021.
Joints in concrete pavements are critical places where the first damage of concrete pavements usually occurs. The durability of concrete pavement depends on the proper operation of expansion joints (influenced by their proper design, execution and maintenance). Due to advances technology in concrete pavement, the availability of new joint filling materials and the observed climatic changes, the traditional methods of designing expansion joints and the requirements they meet may require a revision of existing solutions and standards.
The topics to be discussed during the colloquium should be:
1. Proper operation of joints and their role in concrete pavements - terminology, types, application, typical problems with joints.
2. Correct execution - sealing and filling - maintenance and repair of joints - hot and cold joint sealants, filling with rubber profiles.
3. Cooperation of slabs within the transverse joints - methods for determining the load transfer efficiency (LTE) factor in the joint – defined level of good and bad cooperation of the slabs based on FWD measurements.
4. Role of dowels in the transverse joints - experience with the measurements of the dowels position on concrete pavements in Poland and abroad in Germany, Czech Republic, Belgium, US measurements on old and new pavements - exchange of experience.
5. Experience in Germany in the field of alternative concrete and asphalt pavement connection – execution of a series of expansion joints - examples of structural solutions used on pavement currently being built - experiences to date and proposals for national solutions.
6. Damage within joints - "blow-ups" - German experience.

The alkaline reactivity of aggregates is defined as the susceptibility of aggregates to react with alkalis contained in concrete, which may result in a reduction in the durability of the concrete and, consequently, its destruction.
The aim of this event is to facilitate a constructive dialogue between researchers and practicioners in order to foster a better understanding of roads sustainability and ecoinfrastructures.
